THE PUNDAZOIE COMPANY

Founded by Gabriel Haros and Anastasios Anastasiou during the 1980's the name "PundaZoie" is derived from two Greek words which put together mean "everlasting life".

Haros is a Tasmanian businessman, a former State Parliamentarian, (Tasmania) and a member of a prominent Tasmanian business and manufacturing family.

Anastasiou's knowledge of best practices for dry-farming techniques is soundly based given he has worked extensively in Australia in the olive growing industry and in Saudi Arabia, creating the Royal Gardens and growing semi tropical plants in the desert for consumption by both animals and humans.

He is currently employed as Director of Agriculture on the Greek Island of Chios, specializing in drought eradication programs for the islands in the Mediterranean.

WHAT WE DO

The Greening the Desert™ Program uses deep-rooted, long-lived canopy trees requiring minimal water to sustain and restore farmland and provide forest species to sequester carbon and reduce global warming.

These forests are known as carbon sinks and will survive for many hundreds of years.

Greening the Desert™ forests are not felled for their timber, enabling and sustaining companion shrubs and crops to deliver regular harvests in times of drought and where the soil is degraded by salinity.

Reducing your carbon footprint - the Greening the Desert Program™ is undergoing the Greenhouse Friendly™ approval process for endorsed abatement to offset carbon emissions and reduce the size of its Customers' carbon footprint.

Selling abatement - a Customer can buy any number of abatement offsets for a Vintage Period of up to fifty (50) years. Offsets become available as they occur between January and December in any given calendar year (which is known as the Vintage Year).

Retail & wholesale sales - both retail and wholesale Abatement Units are on offer. Prices may vary slightly depending on the size of the order; the term of the Vintage Period and market forces.

Hedging - as Australia draws closer to compulsory trading anticipated by 2011, Abatement Units will become scarce and more expensive; thus the purchase of abatement will act as a hedge against future price rises.

The Swiss bank, UBS (15 November 2007) predicts the Carbon Emissions unit price will rise to at least US$49.00 by 2010.

FIELD SOLUTIONS

The fodders and forests used by PundaZoie include trees and nutritional plants that are sustained and flourish in drought-stressed and highly saline conditions.

These forests and plants -
  • need little regular water;
  • flourish in dry and sandy terrain;
  • include a broad carpet of ground cover to colonize saline and arid landscapes;
  • retain water within their deep roots that support colonies and plantations for cash crops;
  • restore native flora and fauna and landscape shattered and denuded by mining activity;
  • bind the soil;
  • create long-term carbon sinks to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, and lessen atmospheric heating from deserts and barren land.
Correct practices – PundaZoie’s time-proven agricultural and forestry practices enable plants and trees to provide edible and nutritious green fodder for animals and livestock, delivering ingredients for the production of cash crops and harvests and other valuable commodities for human consumption and medicinal purposes.

OUR REFORESTION PROJECTS

Greenhouse Friendly™ approves abatement projects that meet its demanding criteria to "generate additional, permanent and verifiable greenhouse gas emissions reductions or sequestration."

A forest sink project can take the form of trees or other woody vegetation established for "environment and/or natural resource management purposes."

PundaZoie's™ first forest plantation in its Greening the Desert Program is being established across 2000 hectares at property located in the Southern Midlands area of Tasmania where a range of suitably dry-land species is being planted.

This land was once prime grazing pasture for the production of the most sought-after, superfine merino fleece in the world but has become an ecological disappointment as prolonged drought diminishes its productivity; causing profitability from fine wool production to become marginal.

Rainfall is reduced - in the past, this district enjoyed annual average rainfall of about 500 mm a year; however the recorded rainfall for the past ten (10) months has been approximately 200 mm.
